Silver Comet Ride October 8th 2022

Jeff and Brenda Henderson are planning to do this year’s Silver Comet Ride on Saturday October 8th at 10:00am EASTERN time (9am Central time) from the trailhead in Rockmart Georgia located at 100 E Church St, Rockmart, GA 30153.

The Silver Comet Trail is a Rails-to-Trails bike route in Georgia that runs from Smyrna GA to the Alabama state line where it connects to the Chief Ladiga Trail. The two trails are a combined 94 miles long making it one of the longest bike trails in the country.

Rockmart is about 2 hours driving from Guntersville and you’ll want to get there in time to prep your bike for the 10am start of the ride so plan accordingly.

The ride would be out-and-back with us initially going East out of Rockmart on the most scenic section of the Silver Comet Trail. This section also has the fewest road crossings.

The railroad tunnel under Brushy Mountain is 7 miles from the start and the Pumpkinvine Trestle is 14 miles from the start. Both are great photo opportunities!

We typically pair up riders based on pace and distance they would like to ride so expect an email from Jeff a week or two before the ride so we don’t have riders left without a partner.

As an example, Brenda and Jeff will likely ride 20 miles each way (40 total) at an average pace of 14-15mph. Others may only ride to the tunnel and back (14 miles total) at 10-12mph.

Doing an out-and-back ride makes it easier to support but if anyone who’s not riding wants to volunteer to be a SAG (support) person, let Jeff know.

Some of us will stay in Cedartown on Saturday night at the Econo Lodge where we’ve stayed before. Rooms start at $89 per night (Senior 60+ rate).

Chances are those staying the night will get together to watch the Bama/Texas A&M or Auburn/Georgia at a nearby sports bar depending on what time the games are scheduled.
