Winter is behind us and it is time to get out on the water. As is tradition, we will raft-up the boats at Short Creek on April 1st. We plan to leave the dock at 12:30 and raft-up about 1:00 and break the raft at about 4:00, depending on the group. If you do not want to be tied-up that long (both literally and figuratively) do not let that keep you away, you can anchor and we will have a dingy to bring you to the raft. Bring an appetizer to share while we get together on the boats. To add to the atmosphere we will have Scott Morgan playing guitar. It will be a great event to get the boating season started off.
Please RSVP so we can get a rafting plan together and I will be around Gossip Hall at noon to finalize the plan. If weather gets in the way, we may reschedule. I will send you an email to let you know.

CANCEL THE SHORT CREEK OPENING FOR APRIL 1 AND MOVE TO APRIL 15TH.
Weather forecast is for high winds, if we going to raft up let's have a nice day so I am moving the date. I will be wrong so be kind.
As is tradition, we will raft-up the boats at Short Creek on April 15th.
The America's Boating Club and past Commodore Wills, would like to invite LGYC to lunch and learn more in a two part session on April 15. Each section will run for about 2 hours and will be taught by qualified instructors with a lunch break from noon until 1. You can attend either or both, the classes are free.
Lunch, drinks and snacks will be offered for $10 so bring some cash or a check.
Please RSVP so we can set the ballroom up for the right numbers.
Knots and Line Handling: The Knots You Need to Know - 10 until 12
Do you know which knots to use in every situation? Learn to securely attach your boat and other useful applications.
Learn how to secure your boat to docks, piers, and other boats; handle rescue and repair situations; manage running rigging; anchor securely; and tow other vessels or people. This seminar has been designed to help you to know which lines and knots to use in each situation. You'll gain knowledge and hands-on experience selecting the appropriate line and tying the 10 most useful knots, bends, and hitches; and you'll learn how to care for the lines on your boat and on the dock.
Lunch Break 12 until 1
Basic Weather and Forecasting - 1 until 3
The safety and comfort of those who venture out-on-the-water have always been weather dependent. This seminar is a must for boaters who have never taken a weather course. The complex subject of weather is presented in a way that is both understandable and useful. Topics include:
Air Masses and Fronts;
Winds;
Storms;
Clouds and Thunderstorms;
Fog; and
Forecasting
Good sources for local weather info
If this is successful we will consider other topics in future months. Other suggested topics include Man Overboard skills including actual boat outing, Rivers, Lakes and Locks with a lock through Guntersville Lock and Partner in Command.
LGYC members, we will be having a potluck dinner with the opening of ShortCreek which has been postponed until 4/15/23. Please plan to join us after the opening of Short Creek at the club, either clubhouse or gossip hall, weather dependent! Please plan to share your favorite dish/side/desert and join us for great food and fellowship!
The Turtle Point Commodore's Ball will held on Saturday April 22 at 5:30. The social starts at 5:30 with a steak dinner and band/dancing to follow. Current estimated costs is $100 to $125 per person. There is very good golfing available as part of the club, the cost $65 plus cart or they have a new pool area to enjoy. Typically arrive on Friday and leave on Sunday.
There will be additional information in a couple weeks. They have asked to RSVP by April 1.
This a great opportunity to take a ride down the river, see a different club and meet some new friends.
It is once again time to show our appreciation for the club by pitching in for a few hours to do projects to enhance and improve the appearance of the club. Come for the weekend and enjoy the fruits of a bit of labor along with a lot of fun and camaraderie.
Last year we had about 50 people show up and it was a great success and a lot of fun. This is the weekend before the Commodore's party so it is a great way to make the club look it's best for the celebration.
The project list will continue to develop as the Board of Governors does its annual walk through to identify needs. If you have a special project or task listed below your want to lead, please contact Chuck Wills at 256 506 7773.
Bring gloves, wear appropriate clothing and an special tools you believe would help to work safely on the tasks you would like to participate in.
Teams will be formed based on needs, skills and any physical limitations. First and foremost, come to have fun and participate and don't take on tasks your body is not able to safely do!
Lunch is provided and the beer and wine will be offered in the afternoon.
Please resister so we can order the right amount of food for lunch and beer and wine for the after party.
